ABSTRACT
The goal of optimization in mammography is to perform the examination with the lowest radiation that will provide diagnostic images. While targeting a minimal radiation dose, care should be taken to ensure that the image quality is not lower than necessary. It is important to evaluate the radiation risk associated with mammography together with the potential benefits of early diagnosis and to consider the benefit-risk estimates. When patients opt out of necessary examinations due to perceived risks, they may unknowingly expose themselves to significant health consequences. Radiation risks from digital mammography and digital breast tomosynthesis are considered small or negligible risks and the benefit-risk estimates are quite positive. Therefore, individuals should not avoid mammography screening within the specified age range and frequency.
